Explainable AI: Why You Can’t Trust What You Don’t Understand

We all know AI is powerful. But here’s the catch: most of the models we use today—especially large language models and deep learning systems—are black boxes. They make predictions or decisions, but they don’t show their work.

There’s an entire toolbox emerging to help make AI decisions understandable:

  • LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations): Helps explain individual predictions
  • SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations): Breaks down how each feature influenced the result
  • Counterfactual explanations: Show what would’ve needed to change for a different outcome
  • Attention maps in vision and NLP models that show what the model “focused” on

While these tools don’t always solve every black box problem, they’re rapidly improving—and essential in fields where trust and clarity matter.
